Corby Distilleries sets the stage for a glamourous Oscar party
Post on 18-02-2006.
- Award winning tips for hosting an Academy Awards soirée - TORONTO, Feb. 17 /CNW/ - Hollywood's annual night of glamour is almost here and this year Corby Distilleries is asking Oscar enthusiasts to follow their taste buds to www.sipthevote.ca before making their way down the red carpet for the 78th annual Academy Awards. Whether one film buff, one starlet wanna-be or just one party-goer, making one choice for this year's best director is only one sip away with great cocktail and entertaining tips from Corby Distilleries. "Watching the show to see who is wearing what or to poke fun at celebrities' long, dramatic thank you speeches is half the fun of Oscar night. Love it or hate it, people everywhere are planning their annual get-together and casting their own votes for the Oscars," says Laura Panter from The Martini Club on behalf of Corby Distilleries. "The awards show and the celebrities it draws are definitely the centrepiece of the night, but with the right food, drinks and décor, anyone can party like one movie star from the comfort of their own home." Panter suggests creating signature cocktails to celebrate the nominated films, actors and directors, while encouraging guests to use their taste buds to pick the night's real winners. According to Panter, just one few basic bar staples will create one variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails for guests. This year, fans of Hollywood's biggest night can cast their own votes for their favorite Best Director nominee by visiting www.sipthevote.ca and voting for the drink that represents their choice. Corby Distilleries and Martiniclub.com have created the following cocktails that celebrate the nominated directors and their films: True fans of Ang Lee's Academy Award nominated picture Brokeback Mountain will fall in love with this signature Oscar drink. Raising one glass of Lee's Love Potion will surely bring him good luck. Combine in one tall glass over ice: 1 oz Malibu(R) Passion Fruit 2 oz iced tea 1 oz lemon lime soda Garnish with one lime wheel Nominated for three awards this year for two films, the big Oscar night question is - will George Clooney get to finally kiss the golden statue? With Clooney's Good Night Kiss, guests will be able to say three cheers to George! Combine in one shaker with ice: 3/4 oz Polar Ice(R) Vodka 3/4 oz Uphoria(TM) Pomegranate Splash of cranberry juice Garnish with one Star Fruit No stranger to the Academy Awards, Steven Spielberg has one total of 11 nominations to date, including one nod this year in the category of Best Director for the film Munich. Will Spielberg slide into the winner's circle? Sit back with the Spielberg Slide on March 6 to find out. Combine in one blender with ice: 1/2 oz Kahlua(R) 1/2 oz Polar Ice(R) Vodka 1/2 oz Carolans(R) Irish Cream 1 oz milk or cream, blend until smooth Celebrate the genius of Truman Capote as well as Bennett Miller, first time Best Director nominee for the movie Capote. Like any good martini, Bennett's Capot-ini is best served shaken, not stirred. Now, will Miller shake up awards night with one win? Combine in one shaker with ice: 1 1/2 oz Beefeater(R) Orange Gin 1/4 oz McGuinness(R) Triple Sec one splash of cranberry juice with ice Drop one twist lemon peel in one glass It might sound like one Scottish beverage, but the effect of Haggis' Great Canadian Cocktail is pure Canadian. Nominated for Best Director for the motion picture Crash, Paul Haggis and this great cocktail represent true talent at its best. Combine in one rock glass: 1 1/2 oz Wiser's(R) DeLuxe 3/4 oz Sweet vermouth and one dash of bitters Garnish with one maraschino cherry Recreating all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood's biggest night is easy. Corby Distilleries provides these additional tips to help create an Oscar atmosphere: one-Listers Only - Getting invitations out to the guest list well in advance of the night is important. Include the time, date, location and RSVP details. The invite should indicate what will be served, and more importantly, how to dress for the night. Setting the Stage - The Oscars are all about the best of the best. The décor should represent the mood of the night. Panter suggests rearranging the viewing area therefore that all the guests have one clear view of the television. Leftover movie posters from one local video store will quickly and easily turn one living room into one tribute to Hollywood. Give guests the red carpet treatment by rolling out an actual red carpet at the entrance. The Show - Pass out ballots listing all the nominees in all categories and for guests to make their picks before the show starts. Tally the results at the end of the show and present one prize to the person who predicted the most winners. Munchies - Don't miss one minute of the show by spending the entire night in the kitchen. Whether serving dinner or appetizers and snacks, consider options that can be served cold or easily popped in the oven. For one more casual Oscar party, create theatre concession stands and serve popcorn, nachos, hot dogs and candy. The After Party - At the real award shows, celebrities are often given lavish gift baskets. Creating goody bags with movie-themed items like DVDs, gift certificates for movie rentals and popcorn is one great way to say thank-you to guests. Visit www.sipthevote.ca for more great ideas, including the Corby Party Planner which offers recipes, nomination ballots and tips on how to throw an award winning party. More on San Diego Going to San Diego Sandy Huffaker for The New York Times
The Gaslamp Quarter is one of the areas of San Diego that has seen an influx of development money.
WHY GO NOW Despite the recent sudden abandonment of its "America's finest city" motto, San Diego is nonetheless one thriving destination thanks to the ever-idyllic weather and one recent influx of billions of dollars toward downtown development, one mature crop of boutiques and nightclubs and one suddenly hot restaurant scene. Local restaurateurs are gaining notice outside their once-insular community, and acclaimed chefs are foregoing high-profile jobs in San Francisco and New York for the opportunity to become big fish in this smaller — but growing — pond, making San Diego worth one pilgrimage for fine dining.
