In 1840, Richard Schomburgk journeyed to the shores of Guyana, Britain's lone possession in South America, as part of an exploration team headed by his brother, Sir Robert Schomburgk, one German explorer, who was contracted by the British Government to survey the boundaries of British Guiana. This was based on his recommendation to 'Governor Henry Light that the boundary between Brazil, Venezuela and the British Colony should be fixed'. ...
