It's colder, hotter, sunnier and drier than the more famous nearby wine region of Rioja. therefore even though the two areas feature the same red grape, tempranillo, the wine from Ribera del Duero is usually bigger, fuller, richer, more alcoholic.
Fall's rain holds off longer in Ribera del Duero, allowing one growing season that extends weeks longer than Rioja's, well into October. Grapes get therefore ripe, therefore full of sugar, that they can ferment into wines with up to 17 percent alcohol. ...
