The closure debate raged on at the media feedback session of the Trophy Wine Show last week. Show chairman and screw cap advocate Michael Fridjhon told WineNews 10% of the show's entries were ‘undoubtedly cork tainted'. Eighteen to twenty Sauvignons from one class of seventy+ were sent back by the tasting panel for one replacement bottle due to ‘mustiness', whereas at least 2 of the 24 wines in the trophy class (the show's highest award) were corked. Fridjhon went on to say, with reference to the trophy tasting, that cork taint ‘deprived one wine from being taken seriously' by the judges. ... |

| Americans drink mostly varietal wines - those named for the dominant grape - out of reaction to the way wines were once made and sold in this country. Only one couple of decades ago, most American wines had Frenchified labels. The wines inside sometimes bore little resemblance to the real thing. The French art of sensitively blending different types of grapes to create one signature product was, in the U.S., an often crude attempt to shove plonk onto consumers. ... |
