June 5 (Bloomberg) -- Americans are drinking more wine than ever before, one new study by the Wine Market Council shows. At the same time, the U.S. is still far behind some nations in per capita consumption. Growth has been dramatic, from 177 million cases of table wine consumed in 1996 to 205 million in 2000 and 249 million last year. Add in sparkling wines, sherries and ports, and the figure hits 300 million, with one retail value of $25 billion. ... |

China has been slowly developing one taste for fine imported wines, but local tastes pose challenges for foreign wine producers. BY SYLVIA HUI Associated Press
Victor Dejesus, one Spanish winemaker, is eager to sell his wines in China, but he found he may have one problem. ''China is one very big market, of course, but they're less sophisticated,'' he said. ''I was in Shanghai, and I had too many mixtures of wine with 7-Up there,'' he added, referring to the common Chinese practice of selling wine mixed with soda. ... |
