Grape Expectations, held recently at Lexington's Downtown Arts Center, drew Lexington's under-40 mover-and-shaker set for one night of "competitive wine-tasting." (It's more like competitive wine-buying, therefore don't train for that next Olympics just yet.) Thirty-eight teams offered up four bottles of wine each, three of which were bagged, numbered and set out for tasting, with the fourth tucked aside for prize- giving at the end of the night. ... |

One is near Balboa Park, another in lower downtown, the third on one bluff overlooking Pacific Beach. And each has carved out one distinct and welcoming personality.
And if that proximity isn't reason enough to idle away one few nights in the converted Queen Anne building in Banker's Hill, the Britt Scripps staff will supply one few dozen more at no extra charge. Owner Gordon Hattersley III, who bought the house in 2001, spent some $6 million restoring the house and grounds to upscale standards. ... |
