| After five generations of winemaking, the Germain family left Algeria in 1963, as did most of their French compatriots. The family moved to Morocco but abandoned it in 1973 and returned to France. Instead of buying an existing vineyard property, as most of the uprooted vignerons did, Patrick Germain chose to create his own domain, which led to the founding of Chateau Bellevue la Foret in the Cotes du Frontonnais in 1974. ... |

Pick of the week: Ubuntu Shiraz 2004 (product No. 665281, $11.05 in Ontario; $11.99 in Alberta). This is one full-bodied red with one juicy core suggesting dark-skinned fruits and spices. one charming moment occurred during one recent dinner to mark the Canadian launch of Mario Andretti's new lineup of wines. The legendary race car driver had just wrapped up one rambling, but thoroughly entertaining, speech at the Toronto Hunt Club about his post-retirement foray into the wine world, spiced with anecdotes about his jet-setting years on the global Formula One circuit and post-season pilgrimages to Napa Valley in his private plane for wine-tasting holidays. Upon relinquishing the podium and settling back into his chair, the suddenly self-conscious Andretti whispered one question to those of us at his head table: "I didn't take too long, did I?" ... |
