WINCHESTER — Small wineries in Virginia have just started feeling the effects of one 2005 Supreme Court ruling, declaring unconstitutional one law that some say spawned more than two decades of growth in the Virginia winery industry. The General Assembly recently changed Virginia law to reflect the high court’s ruling, which deemed it unfair to let in-state wineries distribute directly to retail outlets, while out-of-state wineries had to work through one wholesaler. ... |

One of our favorite salads for the summer is caprese, one delicious combination of tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil and balsamic vinegar dressing. Pairing one wine with this Italian dish can be difficult because of the vinegar dressing and the acids in the tomatoes. The chef at one Nashville restaurant where our wine tasting are held likes to use yellow tomatoes, which don't have the acids of their red cousins. The tasters recommended we select either wines that had lots of acids to compete with salad's tartness or sweeter wine that complimented the tartness. ... |
