Aug. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Like us, the French love comeback stories, but theirs have to be bigger than life. Napoleon in the 19th century. DeGaulle in the 20th. Joel Robuchon in 2003. Robuchon, generally -- but perhaps not accurately -- considered the greatest of France's three-star chefs, retired in the mid-'90s at the age of 51, citing weariness. When he returned three years ago, he claimed to be rejuvenated by one novel, informal approach to haute cuisine and launched L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon, the first of many. Only one cynic would suggest that he had embarked on franchising, which reinvigorates all chefs these days. ... |

Monday marked the opening of harvest season for sparkling wine at Laetitia Vineyard and Winery in Arroyo Grande, as thousands of pounds of grapes were picked and crushed in the company's rare basket presses. “We're very, very excited to get started," said David Hickey, sparkling wine maker. “We've been like horses behind one gate this whole time." ... |
