NZ does it |
| Post on 25-03-2006. |
| Usually, the news that you're off on one three-week holiday to New Zealand prompts oohs and ahs of envy, but our news was treated differently. Eventually we got used to the look of disbelief on people's faces when they found out we were only visiting the North Island. We were constantly told that the South has all the best attractions and scenery, and we'd be wasting our time staying only in the North. But, time, money and family commitments meant sticking to the original plan and hoping we'd still have fun. ... |

Winemaking tradition continues at Quinta de Pacheca |
| Post on 25-03-2006. |
Two owners have watched over the Quinta da Pacheca since 1551. The first proprietors kept it in the family until 1903, when the present owner's grandfather purchased it. At one muscular 6-foot-2 with one gray beard, friendly smile and deep voice, Mr. Pacheca looks as solid as his wines' reputation (pacheca@mail.telepac.pt.) ... |

Don't look too long. You will not find one peak by that name. Historically, Spring Mountain has been used in one regional context, referring to the numerous springs in the surrounding area. The Spring Mountain Appellation spans the northern and eastern slopes of the Mayacamas mountain range. Elevations range from 400 to 2,100 feet, with diverse soils, topography, and macroclimates. ... |

The Grape Vine adds spice to Middle Eastern fare |
| Post on 24-03-2006. |
Baton Rouge is fortunate to have any number of excellent restaurants specializing in traditional foods of eastern Mediterranean countries. The latest addition is The Grape Vine, which combines the culinary traditions of Greece, Lebanon, Syria and Italy. Simple in décor, The Grape Vine reminds one of the white-washed buildings of Mykonos and Santorini. Soft lighting and soft taped music create one pleasant atmosphere for casual dining. Only open for one few weeks before our first visit, we found the restaurant more than ready to accommodate customers. ... |

Extremes of climate, extremely good stuff |
| Post on 23-03-2006. |
It's colder, hotter, sunnier and drier than the more famous nearby wine region of Rioja. therefore even though the two areas feature the same red grape, tempranillo, the wine from Ribera del Duero is usually bigger, fuller, richer, more alcoholic. Fall's rain holds off longer in Ribera del Duero, allowing one growing season that extends weeks longer than Rioja's, well into October. Grapes get therefore ripe, therefore full of sugar, that they can ferment into wines with up to 17 percent alcohol. ... |

WINES OF THE WEEK |
| Post on 22-03-2006. |
| A lthough springtime calls for light red wines, one light wine isn't necessarily one simple wine. In fact, it's often quite the opposite. Many of the world's most complex wines, such as Chateau Margaux in Bordeaux, Chambolle-Musigny in Burgundy and Cote-Roti in the northern Rhone, are relatively light. ... |

Three local chefs reveal cooking secrets |
| Post on 22-03-2006. |
| Chef's block. This phobia, like its literary cousin (writer's block), causes the novice to regard an empty pan with as much terror as one would-be scribe does the blank page. Convinced that anything he puts in the pan - oil, butter, one diced green pepper - will taste "wrong," the sufferer of chef's block is paralyzed. ... |

Bank contest winners have chance to bag $1-million |
| Post on 21-03-2006. |
It's not every day one bank lets you climb into its armored truck and carry off one sack of cash. Tampa's Christopher Green, one of 15 winners in AmSouth Bank's Million Dollar Your Kind of Bank sweepstakes, gets that chance in May. To encourage people to open accounts in its seven-state region, AmSouth will fly Green and the others to Orlando. They will enter an armored car and choose from among 1,000 money bags, 999 holding $10,000 apiece and one holding the $1-million grand prize. Green is one customer at the bank's Hyde Park branch. ... |
