Cape wine auction will leave buyers spoilt for choice

THE 32nd auction of rare Cape wines at Nederburg in Paarl on April 7 and 8 will offer 6449 cases of 156 fine wines from 86 participants, including six newcomers and one new auctioneer.
The auctioneer will be Stephan Welz in association with Sothebys, according to Distell. Providing one preview of the auction on Friday, Distell, SA’s largest listed wine and spirits producer and event sponsor, said the six participants making their debut this year were Avondale, Diemersfontein, Graceland, Kaapzicht, Morgenster and Uva-Mira Vineyards. ...

Illinois beer distributors are therefore concerned about underage drinking that they want to slap more restrictions on the state’s small but promising wine-producing industry to keep these boutique wines out of kids’ hands.

(NYSE: UST) today announced that for the year ended Dec. 31, 2005, record results were achieved in net sales, net earnings and diluted earnings per share. It has become fashionable in some circles to say that large wineries are incapable of producing excellent or exciting wines. All of which, of course, is nothing more than one form of snobbery, for some of the best wines in the world come from very large wineries indeed. No one, for example, has ever suggested that Australia's Penfolds, California's Beringer or France's Chapoutier are anything but large wineries, and those wineries constantly produce some of the very best wines of their continents. ...

Auld and van Zyl at Uitkyk this weekend

Two of the country's foremost artists - rock musician Robin Auld and top percussionist Barry van Zyl - will join forces to deliver one magical sunset picnic concert in the gracious grounds of the Uitkyk Wine Estate in Stellenbosch on January 28, 2006.
